Our alumni club repeats some of our popular events each year. We also like to share updates about our events to our university and at our annual alumni dinner. In both of these scenarios we found that we had to do a lot of paging through our activities to find what we were looking for. We use Alumni Spaces as our club website and we recently figured out an easy hack that allowed us to create and assign categories to our events so we can easily search for and filter them.
I’ve captured the details of how to do this in a short tutorial but read on for the step-by-step instructions.
Instructions – Add a Category to Your Activity
Step 1 Open your Alumni Spaces in the site manager.
Step 2 Open the activity to which to add a category.
Step 3 Select the category (if already available) by placing a check in the check box next to it. You can select multiple categories.
Step 4 If the category isn’t available, enter the new category in the Add New Category field. Click the Add New Category button to add the category to the list of Categories.
Note: Select a Category from the Parent Category drop-down if you wish to create a sub-category.
Result: The new category is added to the Categories box and has a check next to it.
Step 5 Click Update to save the change to the activity.
Instructions – Search for Activities by Category
Now that you’ve added categories to your activities, you can use the category to search and filter them.
To filter the list of activities by category:
From the Activities page, select the category from the Categories drop-down at the top of the page. Click the Filter button.
Result: The Activities page will refresh to display all the activities where that category has been selected.
Instructions – View the List of Categories
Click Categories from the left navigation bar to view the categories.
Click the number in the Count column to view all the activities with that category that have been created on your Alumni Spaces website.
